Call of Duty Modern Warfare Reflex (Wii) Review
If you’ve been following the Call of Duty series of late you’ll know that the
developer alternates each year. Infinity Ward was responsible for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on the PS3/360 and PC back in 2007, and its sequel COD: Modern Warfare 2 this year. Treyarch developed Call of Duty: World at War between them in 2008. It may not sound like much, but the latter has developed Modern Warfare Reflex for the Wii; it’s a little surprising that this actually happened, seeing as Infinity Ward originally created the game, and the two developers reportedly don’t see eye-to-eye. Still, Activision don’t seem to care about that, and have gone forward with the watered-down port, much to the disgust of Infinity Ward I suspect.
As the name implies Modern Warfare takes place on the battlefield in an unspecified near future. You play as a variety of characters, all soldiers, in an interwoven story following the British 22nd Super Army Soldiers Regiment and the United States Marine Corps 1st Force Recon. If you played COD4 this should sound familiar, as the complete story, and every mission, has been ported over. As it’s been downgraded to a weaker console, however, that means we can compare the game directly to it’s 2007 original. And there in lies the biggest problem with Modern Warfare Reflex Edition.
The multiplayer is where the game really shines. The online experience is largely based on that of World at War, as well as the original COD4. You
earn experience points by playing online matches that unlock new weapons and abilities for future matches. The biggest improvement from Treyarch’s last effort is the greater range of online modes available. Beyond the stock standard Free-for-All and Team Deathmatch modes Modern Warfare Reflex introduces objective based games, such as Sabotage, for the first time on Wii. The additional game modes, plus the increased maximum of 10 players per game help to make Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex the best online shooter on the console. No voice chat support, and frame rate issues, hold it back from being in the same league as the original game, but as far as Wii online shooters go you won’t find much better than this.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the greatest first person shooters of all time. Modern Warfare Reflex stays true to its source material, with every mission, and every mode still available two years later. If you can look past the disappointing visuals, and manage to setup the controls to work Reflex Edition is an enjoyable experience. It’s by far the best online FPS on the console, but too many flaws hold it back. Even if you manage to master the controls there’s still the unforgivable issues of the aim-assist actually making it harder. Then there’s the frame rate. 30FPS in a game of this calibre just isn’t good enough, and it really ruins the experience both online and off. It’s beyond us how a game can be released with frame rate issues this bad. If you can’t get your hands on the original, or the sequel, Modern Warfare Reflex is the same game albeit with a range of issues, and is still the best the Wii has to offer in the Call of Duty series.
