Sing Star POP Edition (PS3) Review

Singstar is a series that just keeps on growing in Australia. Ever since the franchise debuted in 2004 the series has gone from strength to strength and has really helped push both the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation 3 to a new market. Even if you're not a fan of the series, the influence it has had on other developers and console manufacturers is unarguable. Here we are now with the sixth PlayStation 3 Singstar game, Singstar Pop Edition, but is the game worth picking up?

Even though there have now been dozens of different Singstar games, the great rock songfranchise hasn't really changed. There is a battle mode in the game, as well as a duet option. Singstar has always been a game that is best played with friends and Singstar Pop Edition is no different.

Singstar Pop Edition brings with it an update which installs directly off the disk. The new update adds trophies to the Singstar experience, as well as voice control. Voice control on 99% of games could be considered a gimmick, but for Singstar it's a brilliant addition. Previously when changing a song or viewing high scores, you would need to use the controller, and having to handle both the microphones and a controller can become a bit clumsy, but now you can just use your voice to change the song. The voice recognition software is pretty accurate and if the game doesn't understand what you've said then a red question mark will hover just below the song. Using voice control is relatively simple, you just need to say clearly into the microphone "Show Song" or "Show Genre" (and replace song and genre with your preference) and the game will move to that particular song automatically. We didn't realise how much of a great addition the voice control was until we went back to using the controller.

When it comes to purchasing a Singstar game by now it should really only come down to one thing, the tracklist. If the tracklist appeals to you then wepink is one angry lady would recommend that you pick the game up, but if there are only a few songs on the collection which take your fancy then we would say you're better off just buying some songs off the Singstore. Overall though, Singstar Pop Edition is a worthy addition to the series, and the new patch does make things easier, but with six PlayStation 3 Singstar games now available, you may need to pick and choose your favourites, especially as the RRP of the games is still $59.95 each.
