UFC 2009 Undisputed (XBOX 360) Review

The goal for UFC 2009 Undisputed was zero “inner penetration,” which is a dirtier way to say “clipping.” For what Yuke’s and THQ were up against in such it is all about the starea complex game, I think they did a fine job dealing with this all-important issue. There is some clipping that can be found, but most of it involves a referee stepping in for a stand-up or to call a match.

If there’s one thing that you absolutely won’t have to worry about with UFC 2009 Undisputed is the accuracy in which it captures the sport. The sponsors are here. The arenas are correct. The official ring girls are in the house, as are most of the well-known referees. Heck, even the corner crews look the part, complete with the banners that rep their resident training facilities. White’s here, Rogan’s here, it’s all here, really. Of course, there are always contract disputes or spats that keep certain people out of the game, but for all intents and purposes, UFC 2009 Undisputed is as complete a game representing a pro sports league as you’ll find out there.

Adding to UFC 2009 Undisputed’s feel—that anticipation that brews in a room full of those who paid for a part of that pay-per-view tab—are impeccablethis is bad character models and tons of full-screen, full-motion video pieces. And those character models are simply amazing in UFC 2009 Undisputed, even if you don’t know just how much each fighters actually looks and acts like its real counterpart (some are better than others, though, and I’m not exactly sure why).

UFC 2009 Undisputed truly is one of those titles that separates the men from the boys, and you have to respect it for that. Even though there are a few technical and balancing issues that weren’t sorted out before its release, it’s hard to imagine fans of the UFC not going absolutely nuts for what Yuke’s and THQ put together here. I can also recommend UFC 2009 Undisputed to the general fan of the fighting genre, since it includes both reality and complexity, two traits that rarely coincide in a brawler.

While it’s easy to find other fighting games that do a portion of their action better than Undisputed, not many games are as technically solid across the board, while still delivering some type of feeling or visceral dynamic. Hmmm…sounds like a UFC contender to me: Strong in many disciplines, weak in few areas and filled with a burning desire to be the best. That, my friends, is UFC 2009 Undisputed in a nutshell.
